Abstract: This dissertation is concerned with the computer implementation of the simplified method of analysing cantilever slabs of concrete girder bridge as well as its corresponding local applications with particular reference to the BS 5400 (1978) and the Hong Kong Structures Design Manual (1993). This simplified method of analysing the cantilever slabs of box girder bridge has been developed by A. Mufti, B. Bakht, L. G Jaeger (1993), and has recently been incorporated into the Canadian's Ontario Bridge Design Code (1992). An attempt through this dissertation has been made to adopt this simplified method for Hong Kong conditions. A series of illustrative examples are given to show explicitly how the simplified method is implemented by using computer techniques. This provides an alternative means for the bridge designer to use this method readily to design the cantilever slabs of concrete girder bridge straight away without losing the sense of the behavior of the Cantilever Slabs. It is found that the computer implementation of the simplified method of analysing the bridge cantilever slabs provides engineers a simple way to determine the peak moment for design without going through the normal procedure of building mesh models with finite element analysis and grillage method, without running through the tedious procedure of repeated calculation with reference to the Pucher Charts. It simply involves with inputting the simple geometrical parameters of the cantilever slab and its associated loading cases, the program will automatically determine the peak moment and moment envelope at root or at a specified section over the cantilever slab. It is also found that the computed result of this simplified method is comparable and reliable as compared to its counterparts of other popular analysis methods for the design of cantilever slabs in Hong Kong. It is therefore proposed to incorporate this simplified approach into the local code of practice.
