Root cause analysis to initiate software process improvement : an approach in large scale consumer software productionen_US
There were many papers tend to address a full model of SPI, but very few papers cast their lights on studying systematically analysis approaches that can help to trigger cost effective SPI tasks in big software organizations. In most conditions, problem or software defects would be simply analyzed and corrected at frontline. On the other side, Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a well known and powerful approach which traditionally used extensively in many industries, such as nuclear power plants, space shuttles and patient safety, etc, which require extremely high reliability in their working systems. But there are very few studies or business cases in software development, especially for consumer software production. According to Humphrey, "Process maturity improvement is a long-term incremental activity"," Standards are established and process data is systematically collected, analyzed, and used", we can see it that analyzing process data would play an important role before SPI. The purpose of this paper is to put forward an approach, which helps effectively and accurately identifying the improvement opportunities by analyzing the root cause of business critical issues to deliver concrete solutions, and its framework for large scale consumer software development organizations. The results we have arrived are a conceptual solution of implementing RCA in large software development organizations, a generic process framework for guiding the execution of Root Cause Analysis, and joint usage of analytical techniques and approaches for cost-effective analysis. We also partially implemented the framework by applying it to case study, which can partly show the value of the framework.en_US
