Abstract: Aggressive or bullying behaviours have cost unprepared employers millions of dollars in western countries. This study aims to uncover the phenomenon of bullying in Hong Kong. A questionnaire consisting of a simplified model of Leymann Inventory of Psychological Terrorization (LIPT) was applied to a sample of 307 employees from different industries to identify the prevalence and range of bullying behaviours in Hong Kong. Characteristics of organisations which were hypothesized to be antecedents of bullying were analysed by scales measuring job complexity, resource adequacy, interpersonal dimensions of the job and interpersonal trust at work. Seventeen percent of the respondents experienced regular bullying. The most common reaction to bullying was to ignore it. Bullying was significantly and negatively correlated with resource adequacy and interpersonal trust at work. There were negative correlations between size of organisation and interpersonal trust at work. The findings also indicated that the larger the workgroup, the less threats, violence, personal attacks and isolation the employees encountered. However, age, gender, length of service and job complexity did not affect bullying. The data suggest that the scope for interventions as part of the preventive policy of bullying should focus on the social environment, leadership training and development in the organisation.
