dcterms.abstractWeb caching is currently the most popular solution to solve the "hot spots " problem and it is very effective for relatively static documents. However, the caching mechanism cannot effectively handle the problem for frequently updated documents, e.g. news update, and stock price update. Also, it prohibits the web server to deliver the latest version of the documents to the clients. In addition, the traditional request and response delivery mechanism may limit the scalability of the service, as the requests must be handled one by one. In this work, I have proposed to solve the problems based on Continuous Multicast Push (CMP), which utilizes IP multicasting to continuously push documents to the clients. To implement CMP in the current WWW infrastructure, I have introduced new extension headers for the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The enhanced HTTP supports the establishment of the CMP as well as switching between the CMP mode and the traditional unicast pull mode. I have implemented prototypes for both WWW clients and servers to validate correct protocol interactions.en_US
