Abstract: The demand of electricity grows very rapidly in recent ten years, many power companies tend to build more high power and high efficiency power station and to interconnect with other power companies, hence, the power network becomes more complicated. Moreover, the introduction of fast static excitation systems having the capability of reversing the generator field voltage in a very short period of time leads to the problems of oscillations which were found to occur in both rotor angle and power within the range of 0.1 to 3Hz. The security, reliability and stability are the main concern in the design, installation and operation of the power system. Power System Stabilizer (PSS) are usually used to enhance the power system synchronous stability and damp the electromechanical oscillatory modes such as machine local, intra-area, and inter-area modes of oscillation. For conventional tuning of PSS's parameters, a white noise signal with the duration of several seconds generating from disturbance control box will be injected into the system, the input and output signals are recorded and analysed by the digital signal analyser, and then ultimate gain and phase can be obtained approximately from the Bode plot. Hence, the parameters of the PSS can be formulated. Such conventional tuning method may cause power fluctuation within the system and are rather slow to implement and less effectiveness due to incorrect state identification under noisy measurement. This project aims to present an approach for identifying the parameters of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) by using the relay feedback test based on the single machine model of the power system, in which the said conventional mathematical model derived from the frequency response analysis may fail to give satisfactory result and may lead to system instability. The proposed relay based tuning technique for PSS was well proven to have less disturbance to the system, and can be implemented easily and quickly.
