Abstract: In this dissertation, PSpice models for the simulation of hybrid stepping motor drives are presented. The PSpice program is well-known for its facility to simulate electronic circuits. Although PSpice does not include models of electrical machines and drives, but those systems that can be represented by constant parameter equivalent electronic circuits can be easily implemented. Moreover, PSpice offers the possibility of design and evaluate the complete system which includes control circuit, mechnical load and the motor. This is very important because it is possible to see how the drive circuit, excitation scheme and load characteristics determine the perfomance of the drive system. Making use of the PSpice models, steady-state simulation including angular speed, phase currents and angular displacement of a typical hybrid stepping motor under half stepping and full stepping conditions have been simulated. For more realistic simulation, hybrid stepping motor with various lead angles under sinusoidal excitation have also been simulated to provide the initial study of motor performance and speed ripple under this excitation. Relationship between speed ripples and speeds with lead angles is then obtained for controller design and to compare with the experimental data. To find out the accuracy of the two methods, PSpice simulation results are compared with those obtained from MATLAB. Experimental results on half stepping and sinusoidal excitation with various lead angles are also used to vertify the PSpice model. The PSpice simulation results showed quite reasonable agreement with those from MATLAB and experiment. The developed PSpice model of hybrid stepping motor has shown its effectiveness in simulating electro-mechanical system rather than pure electronic circuits and is especially helpful for designers at the preliminary design stage.
