Abstract: As rapid change characterizes modern market of the late 20th century, in order to maintain competitive in this turbulent market, the need for strategic change will be a MUST for a company to survive. The objective of this project is to investigate the degree of management's awareness for an environmental change in Hong Kong business. For companies which have such awareness for environmental changes, I would like to find out how many of them are ready to change? Furthermore, I would like to study the characteristics profile of above companies that are willing to change with focuses upon human factors in leadership style and company culture. In order for a company to perform well , it depends on a complex set of trade-offs among the characteristics profile of an organization. Structure, strategy making process, CEO personal characteristic and company culture determine important managerial behavior, they influence the way in which major management tasks are carried out and critical management relationships formed. A review of the literature farther confirms above statement. Yet, in this research, I would concentrate only on the latter two aspects that is rather people and culture oriented which I think is the most important issue that affects a company's readiness for Change. I would try to find out the degree on companies' awareness of change and their readiness for change. Then, I would proceed further to identify their profiles with respect to their leadership style and organization culture. From my research study, I found that most companies in Hong Kong under survey have the awareness for a need to change and most of them are ready to effect change. Companies that have a higher need for change are more ready to change. These companies are showing more concern for production as well as people. They possess a strong culture with higher scores in achievement and support and a lower score in power and role. Apart from that, I have investigate some additional issues with relate to level of Management like the relationship between Management Level and Need for change, Readiness for Change, Concern for Production and People as well as cultural dimensions and Differences. I have adopted the popular Blake and Mouton Managerial Grid as a tool to measure leadership style. For organization culture, I have adopted the instrument designed by Roger Harrison and Herb Stokes, Scores obtained from my research are analyzed and compared with their studies done earlier with 190 mid-level managers. In general, companies in Hong Kong are comparatively having a higher scores in Power and Role, and a lower scores in Existing Achievement and Support.
