Abstract: The Chinese "Sun Tzu's Art of War (STAOW), written some 2,500 years ago, is a tool used by the Chinese Military Force when setting their military strategy during war time. Since then, STAOW has become an approach purposely adopted by scholars in the East and the West on the topic of Corporate Strategic Management. Hong Kong is a place where Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) flourishes. These SME, limited by size and resources, may not have well-equipped strategies in their management, especially in time of difficult period such as the financial turmoil in 1997. With a view to examine the degree SME in Hong Kong have made use of STAOW to improve their profitability and survive in 1997, this project randomly selected 360 SME out of a total of 1,789 companies in the electronic sector for research. Altogether 45 sets of questionnaires came back with a response rate of 12.5%. The average number of employee in each establishment is 10. It was found that STAOW has its significance in the day-to-day operation of the SME irrespective of whether those entrepreneurs know how to apply the principle and there is a direct correlation between STAOW and profit performance. Small is beautiful in business in Hong Kong due to the nature of the place and the people who live in it. To survive and prosper, it is obvious that more efforts should be put forward to help entrepreneurs in the SME perceive and make use of STAOW to their utmost advantage.
