dcterms.abstractWith the advent of high speed network, high bandwidth communication links have been used in design of information delivery systems in order to obtain better performance. The Datacycle architecture is a good example. It broadcasts the whole content of database over a wide bandwidth and high speed network cyclically. The design resolves the I/O bottleneck and allows unlimited number of users to access the database concurrently. Hence, a very high read-oriented transaction throughput is obtained. It is a feasible technology to provide an integrated network wide database, opening up potential to many new communication services. However, there is a potential problem of non-uniform traffic load among access managers in the Datacycle architecture. The aim of our dissertation is to develop a load balancing model for the Datacycle architecture in order to fully utilise resource and further improve the performance of the Datacycle architecture via load balancing. We have developed a load balancing model using star coupler and tunable filters. Two load balancing algorithms are also proposed to balance the traffic load among the access managers in the Datacycle. M/G/I model has been used for performance evaluation. The results show that the overall performance of the system in terms of overall mean delay and system capacity is improved significantly after applying the load balancing algorithms to the proposed load balancing model. The system can be tuned conveniently according to the traffic condition of the system. Balanced traffic load among the access managers can be achieved without physical change in the network configuration.en_US
