dcterms.abstractExperimental studies on water mist system were performed in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Eighty seven tests on liquid fire and two tests on wood crib fire have been conducted by using of different spray nozzles commercially available. The study aims at investigating the extinguishing mechanism of water mist system under different fire conditions and demonstrating its effectiveness in fire suppression. Main contributing factors of a water mist system were identified and their relationships with controlled parameters of the system such as pressure, and nozzle diameter were found. By comparing the extinguishing time, the amount of water used and the rate of room air temperature changed in a compartment with and without a water mist system, it is concluded that a water mist system is good for controlling liquid fires. Furthermore, nozzles discharging smaller water droplets with sufficient momentum would have a better performance on fire suppression. A fire under forced ventilation condition would be more difficult to be controlled and longer extinguishment time was found. The limitations of a water mist system and its applications in Hong Kong were discussed. Finally, topics for further investigation are identified.en_US
