Abstract: China is well known for its historical attractions, its spectacular scenery and tourism facilities. It has become one of the most popular and growing tourist country in the world. The number of tourists in recent years has been increasing every year. A lot of natural resources were ruined. This is in conflict with the tourist and environment protection. One way to solve the problem is to increase the number of the green hotels, managing the green hotel according to the "Green Hotel Rating Criteria". However, it was found that a lot of the guests did not know the meaning of green hotels; the management of the green hotel was not good as expected. This paper compares the degree of the knowledge about green hotel characteristics between the guests and staff according to the importance of the "Green Hotel Rating Criteria" published by China economical trading committee; the extend of Green Hotel Rating Criteria. This study found that the guests did not have specific knowledge of green hotel characteristics. It is hoped that the government can be involved in solving the problem. With building up the green culture, the guests will be more consciousness of environmental protection issue. It is also found significant differences exist in the understanding of importance of the "Green Hotel Rating Criteria" between the guests and staff. We should expand the green consumerism as well as the green strengths. This study discussed the green hotel issues using Shangri-La Hotel in three major cities as case studies. It provides information for hotel management to manage a green hotel. As China has joined the WTO, hotels in China should perform as real green hotels.
