dcterms.abstractThree pressure relief schedules (A: 6 min/relief, B: 15 min/relief and C: 30 min/relief) were applied on the ischial tuberosities of ten male subjects (5 able bodies and 5 paraplegic) in a rotated sitting posture. Skin blood flow (SBF) and transcutaneous oxygen tension (tcpO2) were recorded. Peak SBF, time-to-peak and total hyperaemia, together with tcpO2-before-relief, recovering time (or time-to-resting) and total re-oxygenation of tcpO2 at last relief were used to study main effect. None of the skin microcirculatory measures shown significant difference among three pressure relief schedules and between subject groups. Besides, moderate correlations were found between body mass index and tcpO2 measures (tcpO2-before-relief, tcpO2-before-relief and total re-oxygenation) in Protocol A. Moreover, there was moderate correlation between total re-oxygenation (Protocol B) and skin thickness. A golden frequency of relief was not suggested for people with spinal cord injury. Further study was recommended to search for essential tissue properties as index for pressure relief frequency prescription.en_US
