| Abstract: | This research reviews and discusses the factors affecting the size and growth of Hong Kong Chinese businesses. In my central conceptual framework, I propose that the sizes of the enterprises are shaped by certain internal (e.g. decision-making style and owner's attitude toward risk) and external (e.g. sources of finance and labor market) factors. This study of 24 textile and garment firms, managed and owned by Hong Kong Chinese in Hong Kong, investigates their organisational structure, human resource practices, managerial values and the external social and economic environment they face. The firms are divided into two groups, half of them are small firms (with employees of less than 100) and half of them are large firms (with employees of more than 100). The results of the research lead to the conclusion that there are distinct differences between small and large enterprises in such practices as training, differentiation of work, growth strategy, market orientation, and adoption of advanced managerial techniques. The absence of these in small firms appears to explain their inability to grow. A four-level action plan is recommended for small firms to minimize the gaps. |
