Internet GIS : its applicability in Hong Kongen_US
Internet provides a new media for traditional GIS to operate on. It is changing the access and transmission of GIS data. Internet has facilitated three major changes in GIS: (1) data access; (2) data transmission of data ; and (3) access to GIS analysis fucntionalities. The first 2 changes are self-explained. Through Internet, accessibility and sharability of GIS analysis tools and functionalities are enhanced. End users can work with GIS data interactively on the Web browser without owing GIS software on the local machine. Internet GIS is a special GIS tool that uses Internet as a means to access and transmit remote data, conduct analysis and make GIS presentation. Besides having traditional functions, Internet GIS also takes advantage of Internet and its associated protocol to achieve remote data access in a more handy way than traditional client-server approach. Despite of these advantages, hesitation remains in organization to adopt Internet as a GIS media. This paper addresses the users concerns and implementation difficulties through questionnaires and a prototype development.en_US
