Abstract: This research examines the decision process of a tester in designing the test cases for software testing. By adopting such kind of knowledge in development of the expert system, this system provides cases similar to testers mentally designed for testing the software. Almost all of the software testing methodology suggests the importance of formal documentation and standard in carrying out software testing. However, given formal documentation and standard for testing would not, on its own, provide right test cases which are effective and efficient. It all relies on the insight, experience and knowledge of a tester to design right test cases which are appropriate to the situation. In addition, testers always face limited time and preparation works consume them a lot of resources to design good test cases. Nevertheless, effective software testing depends on a set of good test cases which could ensure the quality of software. In this study, I focus on the critical factors in the process of test case design. By assessing the factors like resources and risk level, we can determine the depth of test as well as the breath of test required for functional test of the betting systems. By capturing such kind of knowledge in the expert system, advice would be given to testers on how to test the systems. In fact, past test cases are retrieved according to the test criteria being defined and adapted to such cases for testing the systems. Hence, case-based reasoning approach (CBR) supplemented by a rule-based system is adopted in this project for developing the expert system. The prototype system being developed in this study is to demonstrate the applicability of expert system in software testing. The system provides consistent, feasibility and correctness of the test cases which would ensure the quality of test cases being designed. To this end, the quality of software testing could be enhanced by using this expert system.
