Evaluation of the effectiveness of ISO 9000 quality system for printing industry in Hong Kongen_US
Abstract of dissertation entitled: Evaluation of the Effectiveness of ISO 9000 Quality System for Printing Industry in Hong Kong, submitted by LEE Wai Tung Frankie for M.Sc. in Quality Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in July 1998. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the said system, about six hypotheses have been proposed on the basis of a self-develope theoretical framework. Of which effectiveness of the system will depend on four major independent variables: people's resistance to change, organisation structures, environmental/society influences, and government's role. Together with two moderating variables namely, management of innovation, and, management roles & skills. We will concentrate on the impact of the industry when implementing the ISO 9000 international standard. It will be a correlational field study. For company wide, participant observer method will be used to collect information via real-life case study observation from a local book's production house that is now certified. For industry wide, questionnaire will be used to collect the opinions of a sample of the management representatives of all local (that is Hong Kong) certified printing organizations. The response will be processed via qualitative analysis for generalization, with the aid of a statistical package, to determine whether or not the specific hypotheses and the effectiveness of the system can be substantiated. Via Pareto diagram theory, this project aims to find out the biggest hurdle towards effective innovation of a quality management system in local printing industry. Find out specifically what area/s we should pay extra attention, offering helps for others in the same industry when people try to launch this project. This research project will re-defining a modified theoretical framework for fellow research workers, possible cause & effect diagrams, together with a propose checklist ready for use by individual printer. It will help to evaluate the effectiveness of ISO 9000 quality system in user's company. The main contribution of this research project including the development of mechanism for future research study. General guidelines for local manufacturing sectors will become achievable when similar research project has carry out continuously, say for example, couple of times.
