Information technology for visually impaired in Hong Kongen_US
In Hong Kong, technologies for the visually impaired are plenty but the users are not fully satisfied nor utilising with the prevailing technologies. It is the purpose of this dissertation project to investigate the reasons behind this 'mis-match' and find ways of improving the current situation. Literature review on classification of visibility in the Hong Kong context and prevailing technologies for visually impaired are studied. A survey is also conducted with questionnaires distributed to various institutions and data analysed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). It is found that the reasons behind this 'mis-match' can largely be attributed to: (a) educational background; (b) vocational needs; (c) lack of relevant technology training; and (d) limitation in resources. To improve the current situation, two models for handling this mis-match are developed - a model of assessing the visually impaired and a model of technical tools for the visually impaired. A prototype advisory system is also built with recommendations generated for advising a proper technology to the visually impaired. Finally, possible recommendations to future information technology for the visually impaired are discussed.en_US
