dcterms.abstractThis thesis reports a textural comparison on two steel codes, namely, the Chinese steel code GBJ17-88 and the British steel code BS5950. The comparison may be divided into four parts as follows: Material requirements Chemical composition and mechanical properties of common structural steel sections together with the types of section sizes and shapes. Section capacities Design rules and formula in accessing section capacities of common structural steel sections under tension, compression, shear and bending, together with combined actions. Member resistance - beam buckling Design rules and formula in accessing lateral torsion buckling of beams with rolled and welded I-sections and asymmetric I-sections, channels and tee sections. Member resistance - column buckling Design rules and formula in accessing lateral buckling of columns with rolled I-sections, channels and laced channels and circular sections about both major and minor axes. It is found that the British standard steel sections are generally larger in sizes and also in capacities than those found in China while the steel quality in both U.K. and China are broadly compatible to each other. The results of the comparison on design rules and formulae on both section capacities and member resistance are summarized in Table A. It should also be noted while BS5950 employs harmonized formula to design for both beam buckling and column buckling, GBJ18 employs merely similar design methods with stability factors for both beam buckling and column buckling; no harmonization in the design formulae and parameters was carried out. Table A SUMMARY OF COMPARISON ON FORMULAS BETWEEN GBJ17-88 AND BS5950 SECTION PROPERTIES SIMILAR -- DIFFERENT -- REMARK TENSION -- Except the use of design strength and the calculation of section area at a connection. COMPRESSION -- Except the use of design strength between the codes. SHEAR -- Only formula for solid web menber is available in GBJ17-88. BS5950 is more conservative. BENDING -- GBJ17-88 does not classify section as plastic, compact and semi-compact as in BS5950. BEAM BUCKLING SIMILAR --DIFFERENT -- REMARK UB(rolled section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in BS5950 for larger effective slenderness ratio. UB(welded section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in GBJ17-88 for effective slenderness ratio > 0.4. UC(rolled section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in BS5950 for larger effective slenderness ratio. UC(rolled section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in GBJ17-88 for effective slenderness ratio > 0.4. CHANNEL -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in GBJ17-88 for all value of effective slenderness ratio. UNSYMMETRICI(rolled section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is larger in BS5950 for 弇 > 0.4. UNSYMMETRICI(welded section) -- Reduction in buckling resistance moment is much larger in BS5950 for 弇 > 0.4. T SECTION -- The GBJ17-88 equation used for comparison is applicable for T section composed of two plates. COLUMN BUCKLING SIMILAR -- DIFFERENT -- REMARK UB -- Both GBJ17-88 & BS5950 Adopt Perry Equation. UC -- Both GBJ17-88 & BS5950 Adopt Perry Equation. CHANNEL -- Both GBJ17-88 & BS5950 Adopt Perry Equation. LACED CHANNEL -- Both GBJ17-88 & BS5950 Adopt Perry Equation. CIRCULAR SECTION -- Both GBJ17-88 & BS5950 Adopt Perry Equation.en_US
