Load distributing in a lan of workstationsen_US
This dissertation focuses on the problem of distributing the workload of a system in a LAN of workstations so that the overall performance of the system is improved. Several issues on the load distributing are discussed. Various load distributing algorithms including sender-initiated, receiver-initiated, symmetrically-initiated, adaptive and non-adaptive approaches were evaluated. They were studied using simulation and their performance were compared. The simulation result showed that the symmetrically-initiated adaptive algorithm yields the best performance among the algorithms studied. The sender-initiated adaptive algorithm performs better than the non-adaptive algorithms. It also has the advantage of not requiring the transfer of partly-executed tasks, making the implementation simpler. A load distributing mechanism was implemented using the sender-initiated adaptive algorithm and run on an Etherent of Sun Microsystems SPARCstation 4 workstations. The implementation further demonstrated that load distributing mechanism offers substantial performance improvement over a system with no load distributing at all.en_US
