| dcterms.abstract | Path finding is a complex spatial information cognitive task that puts high demand upon the image processing capability of a traveler. The traveler constantly observes the environment, catching a variety of cues such as road signs, buildings and other landmarks. The perceived cues are processed, compared to the expected cues which may be formed from previous experience, knowledge, or external media in the memory. Then reaction takes place in an appropriate manner after such complex perception process. In whatever media, verbal or visual, the traveler employs to aid for finding a route, one must decide by himself to determine which way to go. The some basic determinant is the spatial strategies comprising location coding, distance recognition, directional orientation and landmark cognition, which in turn constructs the knowledge of the reaction and to influence the decision of the traveler. In addition, the arrangement and distinctiveness of visual elements in the material world focuses the visual system to attentive regions of the whole image. Such visual attention is caused by both the purpose of visual searching and the characteristics of the visual image. In this study, photograph is chosen to examine its effectiveness to aid path finding. The evaluation is done by two approaches with reference to the elements of the spatial strategies. The first one tries to conform that the image of the photographs comprised the elements of spatial strategies and thus can communicate with the user to direct traveling along route. The second approach evaluates the effectiveness in an indirect way. It intends to find out the features that construct the effectiveness of photographs. Two sample surveys are structured in this study to evaluate the two approaches respectively. Initially subjects are selected for inclusion in two routes to evaluate whether photographs possesses elements of spatial strategies for path finding. It indicates the route directions and landmarks are essential elements that are presented in the photographs. Subsequently, another subjects are engaged in three routes to find out the landmarks qualities such as the shape, color, pattern, texture and distinctiveness, for path finding. It is found that the qualities of landmark and the purposes of photograph for location coding such as to indicate crossroad, to locate the wide area or to recognize long road segment, are highly related. | en_US |
