Abstract: KRUPS Far East Ltd. employed conventional type of supplier assessment method to assess supplier. However experience proved that the conventional method adopted could not supply useful information for making intelligent decisions in supplier assessment. A detailed investigation of various assessment methods suggests that the theories of expert system could offer a new alternative. Furthermore, fuzzy concept can be used to handle impreciseness and uncertainties due to human subjectivity that are common in the process of the supplier assessment. With the use of a fuzzy expert system that consolidate the knowledge and experience among staff, the company would be benefited from the relatively objective recommendations. In the dissertation, a model using fuzzy expert system approach was built and a prototype was developed to test this hypothesis. The result was very positive, apart from the results that could be obtained from traditional scoring system, the fuzzy expert system provides indications of the strengths and the weaknesses of the supplier concerned. In addition, the fuzzy system allows linguistic input constructed from hedges and base terms, an advantage that could not be found among other non-fuzzy system. The analysis, design and implementation of the above mentioned fuzzy system was demonstrated in the dissertation.
