Performance contracting for energy : delivery on promises?en_US
As cost control becomes increasingly important in the health care arena, managers are looking for ways to save money. One often overlooked area is energy conservation. Energy cost can constitute 3 to 10 percent of a hospital's budget, but with energy conservation, that amount can be reduced by 20 to 40 percent. There is an old truism saying, "It takes money to make money". Setting aside dollars for energy works is not easy in a hospital. With the introduction of an energy performance contract, both the technical and financial risks of energy efficiency can be assumed by a third party. In return, the third party is paid only out of the resulting energy savings. Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital introduced a pilot study to research the effectiveness of an innovative business approach to energy management. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of performance contracting in the Hospital through establishing the reduction of energy consumption without affecting the staff satisfaction. The findings indicated guaranteed energy savings cannot be achieved in the first year of operation. A survey was conducted and suggested energy retrofits had not much affected staff satisfaction. The study highlighted the essence of success in energy performance contracting is partnership.en_US
