dcterms.abstractThis dissertation aims to develop a prototype software system using the object-oriented technology. The system chosen is a diet and health management system which provides functionality for users to monitor their health by assessing their diet and their energy expenditure. From the system, users can find the nutritional value of the food they eat, as well as the energy expenditure of the exercises they do. The system can also recommend a menu which best suits the user's needs. The menu is generated randomly to give a better variety of food choices for the user. Moreover, users can specify their food preferences by telling the system which kind of food they prefer, or which kind they do not prefer or totally reject. The system will take this into consideration when creating a food menu for the user. The ultimate goal is to help users to maintain a balanced diet that suits their energy and nutrient requirements. Object-oriented software development technique is employed to analyse and design the system. The prototype is developed using the tool Borland Delphi 2.0 which supports the object-oriented language Object Pascal. The final product will run on an IBM-compatible personal computer in a window-based environment. A number of the well-known object-oriented analysis and design methods are described and compared. Among these, the target system is developed following the main ideas of the Object-oriented Design method developed by Grady Booch. By going through the whole cycle of system development, the object-oriented technique can be more deeply understood and investigated. Advantages and risks of using the technique will also be discussed in this dissertation.en_US
