Materialized view self-maintenance on a personal loan application systemen_US
A data warehouse is a repository of integrated information from distributed, autonomous and possibly heterogeneous sources. This provides a one-stop shop for end-users who require data from these heterogeneous sources for decision support. Materialized views represent the relations stored at the data warehouse that facilitate the decision support analysis. These materialized views are synchronized periodically with the source data to provide up-to-date and consistent information to end users for further analysis. This process of synchronization is known as View Maintenance. In traditional data warehouse applications, the view maintenance process is executed daily when the source as well as warehouse databases are put offline. However, this introduces several problems: - For multinational corporation with offices worldwide, the time difference between countries make database offline impossible. - As more and more data are required for decision support, the batch window may not be long enough for a complete view maintenance process. - The communication line may not be capable to handle such a large volume of data transfer. Self-maintainable methodologies in view maintenance form one of the hottest research topics in data warehouse research. By self-maintainable means that it is capable to maintain materialized views without going to the data source or replicating the entire base relations in the source databases to the warehouse. This opens up a new paradigm in data warehouse application design. The objective of this dissertation is to advocate such methodologies to tackle the problems associated with the data warehouse view maintenance process. A Personal Loan Application System is used as an example implementation of the view maintenance methodologies. With the implementation of such methodologies, the source databases are capable to operate without being put offline during view maintenance, and the time for the process is expected to be much reduced.en_US
