Abstract: The paper summaries the influence on structural performance of simply supported composite beams with large rectangular openings in the web under different parameters. The beams comprise of steel beams and concrete slab with steel decking. Design of web openings is based on plastic analysis of the cross section, considering the moment transfer by Vierendeel action across the opening. The results were carried out under the design guidance in the SCI/CIRA publication 'Design for openings in the webs of composite beams, 1987' with modification in the reduction of plastic moment capacity due to the presence of axial force in the web flange sections according to the recommendation of the paper published in 1992 'Tests on composite beams with large web openings to justify existing design methods'. To assist the research, an interactive computer programme was developed for the web opening analysis. With the aids of the computer programme, the reductions of loading capacity of the composite beam due to different sizes and locations of web opening were determined. And also, the additional deflections at mid-span of the beam resulting from opening were calculated. The results were tabulated and concluded. An example was carried out by using the existing design method and the proposed design method. The results were compared in terms of structural performance and economical aspects. To help design engineer to find out an appropriate opening size and location without affecting the loading capacity. A set of table is established using the proposed design method.
