dcterms.abstractThe general aim of this research is to identify variables and their significance to job satisfaction among professionals in the construction industry. A review of relevant literature leads to the identification of a number of variables related to job satisfaction for the professionals. These variables include satisfaction with the work itself, the promotion and development, the coworker and supervisor relationships, and the pay and working conditions. The level of satisfaction measured by these variables may vary according to different demographic data. The survey approach is used in a field study. The main data collection instrument used in this study is a questionnaire designed to measure job satisfaction in a number of ways. It is used to measure job variables which have been identified as being of possible significance. The samples are drawn from the member list of four professional institutions in Hong Kong. The sample covered a wide range of age groups, different gender, marital status, professional qualification, tenure of service, level of education, class of membership and range of salary. Some of the demographic variables were identified as having a significant effect on job variables. All five job variables in Job Descriptive Index (JDI) were found to relate significantly with age, marital status, tenure of tenure of employment, job level and level of salary. Hypotheses were tested and there was a positive correlation between present overall job satisfaction job variables and, (1) Desired overall job satisfaction job variables, (2) satisfaction with company, (3) positive rating of the company in comparison with other companies. But there was no positive correlation between present overall job satisfaction job variables and, (4) work location (site or office), (5) members and non-members of the professions. This study recommends providing enrichment in job variables relating to satisfaction with work itself among the professionals so as to improve their job satisfaction. Further studies of the job satisfaction of professionals other than the selected professionals institutions are recommended to test whether or not similar result to be obtained.en_US
