Abstract: Noise barrier is a key noise control measure in both new rail system and improvement project for existing railway system in Hong Kong. Study was carried out to investigate the considerations and constraints on the design of noise barriers. Railway noise creates wide spectrum noise problems to the residents nearby the rail systems. Structure borne noise generates low frequency noise that is hard to absorb by most absorption materials of noise barriers in the market while comparing with high frequency noise. Combination of absorption materials was tested with the focus on the low frequency noise absorption by measuring the absorption coefficient of different combinations within a duct channel. The high-density absorption materials and massive covers were found to be good in improving low frequency noise absorption. Case study was carried out based on the predicted undercar noise of West Rail System and measured wayside noise of LAR trains. For the trackform of the viaduct of the West Rail, medium to low frequency noise becomes dominant due to the use of floating slabs. The recommended absorption materials as Alumte, Pyrok and Fibreglass were found not good enough to absorb the low frequency noise. The other properties of the materials as weather proofing ability, workmanship requirement and cost do require further review. A new absorption combination, which consists of high density foam, cavity and damping plastic covers, were recommended due to the good overall noise reduction and low frequency absorption ability.
