dcterms.abstractIn this dissertation, noise generated by a bus during acceleration was studied. A computer model using the vehicle sound power formula was developed to calculate the bus noise during acceleration. Selected site measurements were carried out to test the accuracy of the computer model. The accuracy of the program was mainly dependent on the correctness of the accelerations of the bus adopted and the time for the selections of gear types. It was suggested to carry out more statically measurements and studies on the driving habits of the drivers in Hong Kong in order to enhance the accuracy of the noise predictions. Based on the results from the site measurements, the rate of noise increment would vary not only according to the distance between the road and the measuring station but also the modes of bus motions. The shorter distance and the higher acceleration would give greater rate of noise increment. However, this kind of information did not give in the CRTN method. In addition, the measurement results also verified that the CRTN method has under-estimated the noise levels and the accuracy of the noise prediction by the vehicle sound power formula was high.en_US
