dc.title | The effects of a community-based water exercise program on health outcomes for Chinese people with rheumatic disease | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a community based water exercise program on physical disability, quality of life and confidence in doing water exercise for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus in Hong Kong. Methods: This study adopted a within subject design where the subjects acted as their own controls. All subjects participated in a community water exercise program. A sample of convenience was used. The physical disability level (Chinese health assessment questionnaire CHAQ), quality of life (SF-36 Chinese Version) and level of confidence in performing exercise (Arthritis self efficacy scale ASES) of each subject was evaluated using a self administrative questionnaire at baseline, pre-class, post-class and at an eight week follow up. Results: 31 subjects (30 female, 1 male) participated in the study, repeated measure ANOVA's showed there were statistical significant difference in pain intensity (from the CHAQ) (p < 0.001) as well as differences in six domains of the SF-36 questionnaire : general health (p <0.001), physical function (p = 0.001), role-physical (p = 0.001), role-emotional (p = 0.001), vitality (p < 0.001)and bodily pain (p = 0.006). There was also a difference in confidence in performing exercise (p <0.001) as well as improving exercise compliance by 31 percent after attending the community based water exercise program and its maintenance classes. Conclusion: The result provided evidence for the beneficial impact of a local community based 4 week water exercise program and its 8 week maintenance classes in pain, several domains of the SF-36 and confidence in performing water exercise. These findings provided evidence for the value of this type of community exercise program for people with rheumatic disease in Hong Kong. | en_US |
