dcterms.abstractThere is no doubt that breast milk is the best natural food for our babies. The immediate and long-term health benefits of breastfeeding for babies and their mothers are well recognized. This is a descriptive qualitative study which conducted over a period of six months with multiple points of data collection. The aim of the study is to explore and describe the experiences of Hong Kong Chinese women with breastfeeding, across the time periods during pregnancy and after delivery. A purposive sample of 12 Chinese pregnant women with breastfeeding intention was invited to participate in the study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Each participant was interviewed in Cantonese for four times including three face-to-face interviews during late second trimester of pregnancy (20-22 weeks of gestation); late third trimester of pregnancy (34- 36 weeks of gestation); immediate postpartum (Day 2-5) during hospitalization and one telephone interview at six weeks after delivery. Thematic structure including the four main themes, including intention to start breastfeeding, the ups and downs in breastfeeding, adjusting to breastfeeding and stop breastfeeding or supplementation, and sub-themes of the experiences of Hong Kong Chinese women with breastfeeding derived following content analysis method. Insights gain from the experiences of local Chinese women with breastfeeding in this study will serve as valuable evidences for healthcare professionals in providing appropriate and timely supports and resources to breastfeeding mothers.en_US
