dcterms.abstractStroke is not only the most common disabling neurological disease of elderly population, but also the most common diagnosis being encountered by rehabilitation professionals in clinical settings. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is any significant correlation between memory function and the improvement of functional abilities of a stroke patient. The result of this study has significant implications for clinical management of this client group. Sixty subjects were recruited through the neurological ward of the Wong Tai Sin Hospital. The mean age was 68.8, with 43 right hemiparesis and 17 left hemiparesis. The onset of stroke was 8.5 +- 2.5 weeks prior to being discharge from the Wong Tai Sin Hospital. Thirty-six subjects with first stroke were allocated to the sample group. Twenty-four subjects with normal memory function were allocated into the control group. The Cantonese Version of Rivermead Behavior Memory Test (CV-RBMT) randomly tested all subjects for memory deficit at the time of admission. The test was then repeatedly administered to the stroke subjects in two week's time in order to find out the test-retest reliability. Moreover, the Cantonese Version of Mini-Mental State Examination (CV-MMSE) was used to test the global cognitive function, whilst Modified Barthel Index (MBI) tested the functional ability at the same time. The scores of the CVRBMT and the CVMMSE were used for investigating i) any correlation existed, by comparing their screening and predictive ability as a screening tool, and ii) whether they can be use interchangeably in neuro-rehabilitation. The results indicated that demographic data had no significant correlation with the treatment efficiency. The CV-RBMT showed high test -retest reliability (r = 0.886, p = 0.01) and sensitivity (83.3%). Memory function has significant correlation with both functional improvement (r=0.460, p=0.05) and functional ability after discharge(r = 0.415, p = 0.01). By comparing the CV-RBMT with the CVMMSE, the high correlation (r = 0.862, p = 0.00) supported that memory deficit could act as one of the predicators for functional outcome of treatment program for stroke patients. Thus, rehabilitation professionals should pay more attention to the memory function of stroke patients when designing treatment plan. They could also use this memory function-screening tool to predict patients' potential for rehabilitation, as well as use it as a clinical measure to monitor the progress of the rehabilitation programmes at intervals.en_US
