Abstract: Maintenance efficiency is an important factor in many industries. It is because the direct cost of maintenance is now one of the highest components of operating costs. Therefore, to identify a suitable maintenance management system and to develop a cost effective maintenance strategy has become a high priority in many companies. This project attempts to introduce a modern technique in maintenance management used in the electrical equipment of the Hong Kong Power Station. By considering the safety & environmental factors, plant availability and maintenance efficiency of the implementation result, the advantages and disadvantages of applying such technique are being identified. During the study, different kinds of maintenance approach used by the management were reviewed through reference books, technical paper and comments from experienced engineers. After going through the maintenance history and the exiting maintenance approach in some large industries, a modern maintenance technique (Reliability Centred Maintenance) was being identified. Moreover, various techniques to be used to monitor the condition of electric power cable joints and terminations are also discussed in this dissertation. The effectiveness of the technique "Infrared thermal imaging cameras" using for the determination of cable terminal fault is being identified. By adopting such technique, the failure at the cable terminal can be prevented and the consequences can be avoided or reduced. In the discussion of this dissertation, one of the approach to revisit the RCM strategies is introduced, which is "TM Services RCM approach". It uses a reliability based approach considering the risk based and cost based factors as well as utilising computer to simplify and speed up the review of the RCM process. It is realised that the world is changing rapidly. If a company wants to survive in competitive environment, it should not only focus on their productivity and maintenance efficiency but also to meet customer expectations. Therefore the application case study of Total Quality Management concept in China Light & Power Company Limited is also discussed in the project.
