A study on entrepreneur/small business owners in HongKong and United Kingdomen_US
This report has studied twenty-four real case of entrepreneur in Hong Kong and United Kingdom (twelve cases in Hong Kong and eight cases in UK). They are extracted from books written by Peter M. Chisnall (1987) and Chan & Lau (1999). By reviewing the interview script, the study identified the competence factors (i.e. the personality traits, skill and knowledge) possessed by each entrepreneur. According to the Behaviour Competence Model, these competence factors all contributed to the performance of entrepreneur. By analysing the percentage of presence of these factors among Hong Kong and UK entrepreneur, the study was able to make regional comparison in competence factors for entrepreneur in these two areas. Some of the findings are contrary to the common believe such as Hong Kong people are famous for "grabbing" chances but the study noted the British entrepreneurs are more aware of opportunities. All UK cases under study aware of potential market before they started their own business while there is just one third of HK cases aware of the chances. It is also interesting to note that British entrepreneurs are more innovative and creative than HK entrepreneurs. This suggest that the general impression that Hong Kong people are more creative may not be true.en_US
