dcterms.abstractFall in elderly is one of the major concerns among geriatric care. The problem consumes a large portion of health care resources in after care. There were numerous studies on fall, suggesting that it could be predictable by using simple assessment and could be preventable by appropriate balance or exercise therapy Moreover, regular home visits on fall prevention assessment for recurrent faller have been suggested to be effective in decrease further falls. The aim of this study is to compare the assessment scores obtained in real situation and via teleconferencing using two established assessment tools (Tinetti Balance and Gait Tests' and 'Time Up and Go test'), which are commonly used in geriatric wards of Ruttonjee Hospital. Thirty-six subjects of age over 65 were recruited from geriatric ward and acute medical wards in this study. The data were analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient test (ICC model 1.1) SPSS version 10.0 and correlation coefficient (R2) method of Microsoft Excel 2000. The subjects had not received any treatment or intervention in the study. In the 'Time Up and Go Test', the correlation coefficient R2 was 0.94; the alpha value (ICC model 1.1) was 0.98. In the 'Tinetti Balance and Gait Tests' the correlation coefficient R2 was 0.83; the alpha value (ICC model 1.1) was 0.85. The result demonstrated a high correlation between these two methods of assessment. This study suggested that the teleconference assessment could replace part of the fall assessment remotely.en_US
