Effects of nurse-led preoperative visit on postoperative pain managementen_US
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the nurse-led preoperative visit on the postoperative pain management. It was an experimental randomized controlled trial study, carried out in an operating theatre department of an acute hospital in Hong Kong. Patients having elective major abdominal surgery and using either epidural analgesia or patient controlled analgesia were invited to participate in the study. There were total 49 participants recruited over seven months, 23 of them were randomly assigned into study group and 26 into control group. Participants in the control group received a usual preoperative preparation while the study group on top received a nurse-led preoperative visit the day before operation focusing on the patient education toward postoperative pain management. Both groups of participants were assessed and monitored for pain level. A knowledge quiz was asked on the postoperative day 1 for the understanding toward their postoperative pain management. A satisfaction questionnaire was administered at the completion of the their pain relief regime. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in the postoperative pain scores between the study group and the control group. However, the scores over the knowledge quiz and patient satisfaction over the questionnaire were measured significantly higher in the study group. The most obvious result in the study group was the better understanding in using the verbal rating scale to communicate pain and higher satisfaction to use the verbal rating scale to communicate pain. This enhances postoperative pain assessment and effective pain management can be achieved. In conclusion, this gave evidence to support the development of the nurse-led preoperative visit in the acute pain management services.en_US
