A study of supply chain management and business performance in textiles merchandising companies in Hong Kongen_US
Supply chain management (SCM) has emerged as a significant management philosophy and operational function for a firm competing in the global marketplace. This project examines the basic unit of analysis of SCM, i.e. a purchasing/merchandising organisation and its upstream suppliers and downstream customers. The concepts of supplier management, customer relationship and lean business process are dimensionalised and their association with business performance of the purchasing organisation is assessed empirically in a survey. The textiles merchandising management in Hong Kong was chosen as the context of the study, as the companies are confronted with significant SCM challenges. They face fast-changing market trends and needs. To remain competitive and to excel, such companies have to maintain a win-win-win flow among suppliers, the company itself and customers. Based on a sample of 90 merchandising firms in the textiles and clothing industry, empirical testing was carried out to delineate supply chain relationships and performance. My hypotheses suggest that supplier management, customer relationships as well as the lean business of the own company all contribute to business performance in the SCM. Functions of SCM are hypothesized to include supplier management - adaptation to changing conditions, flexibility, information sharing, supplier dependence; customer relationships - competency to meet customers' quality goals, market information, cost targets; as well as role / tasks in merchandising - quality of employees, ability to resolve conflict. The SCM tasks are generally found to be correlated with business performance in supply chain context. In particular, supplier flexibility and lean business process emerge as key variables explaining business success in SCM context.en_US
