A study of strategic type and retrenching mode on business performance during business downturnen_US
The main objectives of the study are to examine the strategic type, retrenching mode and the strategic fit on the business performance of short-term cash flow to sales and long-term profitability during business downturn. Data were obtained through questionnaires from a sample of 39 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong clothing industry. The test results indicated that internal oriented defenders were the common strategic posture in the Hong Kong clothing industry and have better short-term cash flow to sales. And the prospector type of SMEs with the external emphasis in innovation could perform better in both short-term and long-term business performances. However, analyzer type of SMEs did not perform better than reactors in business performance. It might be the reasons of their inconsistency in strategic orientation that could not build up their competencies and capabilities. And the study found that the recovery strategies of entrepreneurial and efficiency retrenching modes were commonly deployed by SMEs to achieve better business performance in profitability and cash flow to sales respectively. Although there was no evidence to postulate the positive impact of strategic fit between strategic type and retrenching mode on business performance, the results of the study implied that the strategic focus in retrenchment strategies can help the SMEs to achieve their strategic goals and improve their business performance during the business downturn..en_US
