Abstract: This dissertation prototype a web-based multimedia information retrieval system. The focus of this dissertation is on the interface design. Instead of using keyword solely in querying formulation, this querying interface provide functions for user to query on multimedia attributes, content and relation among multimedia objects. This interface should be easy to use and interact with. Channels for users to interact to the system should be available so that they can feedback to the returning results and make necessary modification on querying criteria. This mechanism allows users to resubmit their queries to get results, which are closer to what they are looking for. Java, HTML and JavaScript are the main developing technologies used in building this prototype due to their flexibility, multimedia enable and operation system independence. This dissertation begins with an introduction to explain our objective. We will discuss the demerits of using solely traditional text-based query on multimedia information. After that, we will discuss the difference between queries on multimedia information and traditional relational database information. We will also discuss some desired features of a multimedia retrieval interface. Various querying functions are proposed and prototyped to cater for different characteristics of particular media.
