Abstract: This study was proposed to look into the use of Alternative Workplace Strategies (AWS) in Hong Kong. Through a survey, information was obtained from respondents involved in the management of commercial facilities and properties in Hong Kong. The Respondents proviced information on the background of their company's, the types of AWS being used if any and the future role of AWS in Hong Kong Businesses. Three objectives were examined in this study; 1. To determine whether businesses were using their office space efficiently by asking the respondent what areas of their office operations needed improvement. 2. Whether AWS could be used to improve office operations and the time frame for implementation. 3. To determine based on previous studies whether the level of AWS has changed over the past 3 years. A survey performed in 1997 in Hong Kong will be used to compare with the results obtained in this survey. Three hundred (300) surveys were issued with 39 returned. From the results of the survey it was found only 19% of the respondents were using AWS in the form of Non-territorial officing, Home-based Telecommuting, and Remote Telecentres. This was an overall reduction of some 16% from the results gathered in the 1997 survey. The results also showed that almost 70% of the respondents advised their office operation needed improvement in the areas of internal communication, teamwork, streamlining work processes and customer services. In response to these problem areas we have proposed a number of techniques in this report to improve on these problem areas and at the same better utilize the office space. This therefore presents a good opportunity for AWS, however as our survey indicated educating senior management may be a problem.
