Investigation of indoor air quality associated with different building maintenance activitiesen_US
Recently, indoor air pollution has become a public concern in Hang Kong. People recognize that indoor air quality is more important than outdoor air quality because they spend over 70% of their life time in indoors (HKEPD, 2001).So indoor environment is very important to people's live and health. The aim of this project is to investigate the indoor air quality during the different maintenance works, and determine the health effects on workers. The location chose the Public Housing Estates at Sham Shi Po, Lai Kok Estate, room A. The area of room was around 15 m2, and about 2.5 heights. And the process of maintenance works includes spalling toilet & kitchen, welding & grinding, tiles finishing and repainting. Air samplings were taken eight hours each day during works. This research was commenced on the 22nd of December, 2008 and lasted for 3 months. The main objective of this research project is to assess whether there is any potential air quality problem arising from execution of certain common maintenance works. Find out the passible health effects on workers by comparing with the most suitable standards (international or local). And ambient combustion activities must be considered. From the result, it was found that different maintenance works had less affect to emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NQ2), nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), methane, and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC). The concentrations of these pollutants were almost below the IAQO good standard level. The emissions of radon and formaldehyde had no significant effected during maintenance works. However, repainting work had the highest emission factors for TVOC; the concentration of TVOC was much higher than IAQO good class standard during repainting work, which almost twenty times higher than that level. And spalling works had the highest emission factors for PM The highest concertration of PM10 was even over 100 times higher than IAQO good class level, so it must impact on worker's health. Meanwhile, after two days decay, the concentrations of HCHO and TVOC were not decreased significantly. All in all, from the result, it showed that the most serious problem was PM during maintenance works.en_US
