Abstract: Excel Master Ltd. is a toy manufacturer in the China. It produces the die casting model car mainly. The major customers of the Excel Master Ltd. are coming form USA, Europe and Japan. Excel Master has one headquarter in Hong Kong which has the engineering department for customer service and new product development; the shipment department for the arrangement of the product shipment; the purchasing department for buying the raw material for the factory; the planning department for the production planning. In the China, Excel Master Ltd. has 4 factories for production, 3 factories for tool making and 1 factory for pattern making. Each factory for production has the factory-engineering department (FED), which has the local engineer & technician following up the project. They must have the knowledge about the tool making, decoration making, packing design and quality control. Now, it encounters the following problems in factory. (i) The resigning rate of the experience staff in the FED is higher. (ii) The mistake is repeated during product development usually. (iii) The working hour of the staff in the FED is longer; it affects the working quality. It is looking for some tools to solve these problems. The Knowledge Management (KM) is able to help to solve the problems; it is because that the tool of the KM such as portal is a way to share the knowledge and information to the staff each other. It can help the staff to learn the solution for the existing mistake faster; the mistake is prevented to be happened in another product. Therefore, the working efficiency is enhanced. On the other hand, it can reduce the workload of the staff in the FED. Because they are no need to send the information to each department, the staff from another departments can also capture the information from the portal system directly, The scope of the project mainly focuses on the study of the Knowledge Management (KM) for the engineering department in the factory. The knowledge audit, culture assessment tool and personally interview, etc are used to analyze the work flowing, retention & the retrieved of the knowledge in the department. A knowledge portal is trial to be implemented, which is one part of the knowledge management strategy. The contribution of this study may help the factory-engineering department and other departments in the factory finding a way to implement knowledge management (KM) initiative, which help to enhance the competitiveness of the company in the market. If it is successfully implemented in the department, the following is the advantage: - (i) It can help to reduce the learning period for the new staffs in the department; they can have the correct way to capture the knowledge. (ii) The knowledge can be shared with each other for the factory-engineering department in another factory.
