dcterms.abstractIn practical design of trusses, the member force is determined using an elastic pinned truss analysis. The effects of individual member buckling would not be addressed. However, linear analysis is inadequate to accurately describe the behaviour of spaces trusses owing to the "brittle" behaviour of space trusses. The "brittle" behaviour of space trusses is demonstrated by the experimental work by Schmidt et al in 1976 (1) and the sudden collapse of Hartford Space Truss in 1978 (4). This "brittle" behaviour of a space truss is attributed to the buckling behaviour of an individual strut member. Many researchers have proposed different strut models to take into account the "brittle" behaviour of struts. However, their proposed models all employ stepwise linearized strut characteristic and then be incorporated into an analysis programme that result in a time consuming analysis. This dissertation is aimed at studying theoretically the nonlinear behaviour of space trusses by incorporating the actual "brittle type" strut buckling behaviour into a nonlinear analysis programme. The post-buckling region of the load-deflection curve of a strut is modelled as a continuous exponentially decaying function which is incorporated into the nonlinear analysis programme. Further, the factor of safety of a space truss with reference to its design load is studied.en_US
