Abstract: Book publishing industry is an old and traditional industry, which has a long history in HK and the rest of the world. There is a few big publishers dominating 60% of the whole market. And, there are several hundreds of small book publishers trying to survive in the remaining market share. In order to face this strongly competitive market, these companies must be able to find a new way of doing business, or at least to seek more business opportunities. Internet, a very hot topic in many business and technology magazines, is nonetheless one of the powerful weapons for them. How to integrate this industry with the new weapon in the new era becomes a very challenging question. This study examines the impacts of Internet technology towards those small and conventional book publishing companies in Hong Kong. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the book publishing companies utilize the Internet as a new means to widen their own business and generate more business opportunities and its major impacts. This thesis, uses the questionnaires and case study methodology to investigate this problem. Via questionnaires sent to the publishers, several site visits and interviews with company representatives, and comparative studies with other HK industries and those US cases. It is observed that in order to be able to survive, a small company needs to have a clear vision on the benefits that the Internet technology can bring to the companies themselves. They should also have the ability to foresee the future prospects of this technology. From the survey results I obtain, I find out that most of the small book publishing companies in HK already have this kind of vision. Through this study I can get a more precise vision on the attitude of those book publishers in Hong Kong and how the Internet technology makes some impacts on them. In the end of this thesis, I will also include some future prospects that they may be interested to adopt it later.
