Abstract: The thesis focuses on the structural barriers to entry of fixed telecommunication market in the mainland of China. It is found in the research that such factors as product differentiation, market size, industry growth, and the market concentration level constitute structural barriers to entry of the fixed telecommunication products and affect the financial performance of the fixed telecommunication carriers of China. The thesis also compares the differences between China Telecom and China Netcom in terms of performance both on the new entry market and on the dominant market, and analyzes the factors that lead to such differences. On the basis of reviewing all the relevant literatures in the subject area under study, the thesis introduces a theoretical model and develops a number of hypotheses to test the structural barriers to entry to the fixed telecommunication market. The study collects the a panel data of 31 sample provincial companies of China Telecom over the period 2001-2006 based on which the descriptive analysis, multiple regression, and performance regression are carried out using E-Veiws (an econometric software). Results of the thesis are as followed: I. the product substitution between mobile phone and fixed line telephone has had a direct impact on the unbalanced competition on the telecommunication market in mainland China. II. Through examination of the hypotheses of the structural barriers to entry to the fixed telecommunication market, it is found that the product differentiation and firms' economies of scale is positively related, firm's economies of scale is positively related to financial performance of the firms as well as the market concentration level. However, no obvious positive correlations between the industry growth and the economies of scale or the financial firms' financial performance have been found. III. Through comparison of the performance models for China Telecom and China Netcom, it is found that both in the dominant areas and in the non-dominant areas factors such as the economies of scale, product differentiation, industry growth, and the market concentration affect the dominant carriers and the new entrants in a structural different way. This thesis is the attempt to systematically study the entry barriers to the fixed telecommunication market in mainland China. The thesis also tries to find out the main factors that cause the unbalanced competition on the Chinese telecommunication market through empirical research. For the benefit of the healthy development of the Chinese telecommunication industry and of the harmonic competition, the thesis provides suggestions for governmental policy makers, industry executives and experts on the reorganization and restructure of the Chinese telecommunications industry.
