A study of the reliability and validity of the Chinese version aberrant behavior checklisten_US
The Aberrant Behavior Checklist was developed by Aman in 1985 to measure the treatment effects on challenging behavior of adults with mental handicap. The objective of this study is to develop a Chinese version ABC (ABC-C) and gather evidence on its validity and reliability. The translation and content validity of ABC-C were evaluated by bilingual expert panel members. All items of the ABC-C were found to be relevant to its 5 factors, and 4 of the 5 factors demonstrated adequate representativeness. The expert panel suggested that the last factor, Inappropriate Speech, needed to be revised or deleted. 306 moderate to severe mentally handicapped adults from hostels, day activity centres and sheltered workshops were recruited to participate in the study of construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest and inter-rater reliabilities of the ABC-C. They were observed and rated by 72 trained raters. Factor analysis, using principal axis factoring, followed by varimax and promax rotation was used to explore the latent factor structure of the ABC-C. Results indicated the ABC-C was composed of 5 factors which could explain 57.6% of variance. 49 out of 58 items were loaded to original factors and therefore ABC-C had a similar factor structure as the original ABC. The "Inappropriate Speech" factor, which was commented as lack of representativeness in content validation, appeared as a consistent factor consisting of all the original 4 items. The 5 new factors of the ABC-C were named as 1) Lethargy, Social Withdrawn; 2) Irritability, Agitation, Crying; 3) Hyperactivity; 4) Stereotypic and Self-Injurious Behavior; and 5) Inappropriate Speech. The internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha for these 5 factors were high (range from .8560 to .9502). The inter-rater and test-retest reliability of the ABC-C were estimated with ICC, which ranged from .5342 to .8921 and from .8386 to .9849 respectively. Based on the present findings, ABC-C was a valid and reliable instrument in the assessment of challenging behavior of people with moderate to severe grade mental handicap.en_US
