This research explores the use of agents for managing risk in credit payment and enhancing security in electronic payment systems. In this research, the problem of payment security is split into data privacy and credit risk aspect which can be partially solved through different ways which include risk evaluation based on payment history, seller-side risk managing techniques, use of encryption technology and selection of information to different agents. The ideas of above security measures are realized into an electronic payment testbed that consists of a society of agents (buyer agents, seller agents, payment agent and risk evaluation agent). The agents communicate with one another over an open network such as the Internet in order to complete a transaction. In the implementation, all communications among the agents have been encrypted. The buyer and seller agents verify with each other the order information (information related to the trade only). In case of credit payment, the seller agent consults the risk evaluation agent for payment history of the buyer. The risk evaluation agent returns the buyer payment history in form of a value called 'Credibility' which reflects the goodness of payment of the buyer based on the buyer's payment history. With reference to the 'Credibility' and user-defined risk-related parameters, the seller agent determines whether it should reject a credit payment request from a buyer. Once the verification is completed, the buyer and seller agent send their payment information (information related to payment only) to the payment agent. The payment agent performs checking on validity of the payment information and accounts of both parties and update their balances accordingly. The payment agent is also responsible for passing the outcome of the payment to the risk evaluation agent for future 'Credibility' calculation. In addition, a payment protocol based on agents is devised and implemented to structure the interactions and information exchange among agents in the electronic payment testbed. A series of experiments were carried out and showed favorable results for the system running the devised payment protocol.en_US
