Abstract: For years, the textile chemist have found it difficult to provide a consistent measurement of colour to ascertain the provision of a reliable source of constant quality products. Objective colour difference evaluation are of particular interests to the textile industry such as sorting of dyed batches, acceptablility decisions in quality control, setting of colour tolerances between buyer and seller, dye equality control, fastness evaluation and computer colourant formulation. Instruments necessary for the measurement of colour objectively has been in existence for years, but a low cost rapid data handling system had been lacking. Systems employed today often comprise a spectrophotometric colorimeter with either an integral microprocessor or a personal computer. Spectrophotometric measurement of colour for the textured fabric normally measures the reflectance of the light from the sample over the entrie visible light spectrum and accounting for the scattering of light from fabric by the method of automatic averaging over the entire area under inspection. These process are usually carried out in the laboratory. The purpose of this study is to develop the methodology to implement a low cost colour quality inspection system with a CCD video camera. The main application is for the finishing & dyeing industry of the textile field to carry out an on-line total quality inspection of fabric dyed to a specific colour according to customer specification. Experiments were conducted to determine the criteria for the successful implementation of the system. Due to the varying conditions in the production environment, it would be difficult to develop a continuous colour differential system bound by the various parameters and cost with results comparable to readings within the laboratory. With all the non-system parameters maintained stable and unchanged, various algorithm were studied and compared. The project looked into the possibility and benefits of implementing with the digital techniques with the special acquisition methods for stable colour measurement rather than the hardware improvement in the spectrophotometer. The selected algorithm is then tested to the applicability for the industry with encouraging results.
