An investigation on the relationship between supervisor's role and supervisory satisfaction in a non-traditional dominant setting : a hospital studyen_US
This research project is a quantitative study which investigates how supervisory satisfaction relates to satisfaction with supervision rather than other conditions or agents in the workplace. Since the supervisor subordinate relationship is becoming increasing important given the shift from managing work to managing people, variables were theorized as influencing satisfaction. Variables manipulated included are supervisory support, procedural justice, participation in decision making, resources as well as discrimination. In addition, the gender of supervisor was also taken into consideration to ascertain its effects on the parsimonious model to predict the variance in supervisor satisfaction. This empirical study examined 102 non-traditional supervisory relationship (subordinate reporting to a male supervisor) and 32 traditional relationships (subordinate reporting to a females supervisor). The sample was selected from nursing profession in the study hospital. Results revealed that four of the five variables theorized, predicted a high level of variance in supervisory satisfaction in both traditional and non-traditional relationships. However, the predictors were not different for the two groups.en_US
