Abstract: | This study is an attempt to find out the suitable prediction method for break-in noise inside building due to road traffic in Hong Kong. The annoying properties of road traffic noise are considered closely related to the intrusiveness of the noise above the background level and intermittent noises due to traffic situation. Differences of percentile sound levels, which can describe the fluctuation characteristics and relate to the annoying properties of noise, are used as objective measures to characterize the noise environment due to road traffic. Extensive site survey with particular technical setup for typical traffic conditions and acoustical environment in Hong Kong has been conducted. Significant factors influencing the emission of noise from vehicles and acoustical environment are categorized in terms of traffic flow patterns, road configurations and building configurations. Sound level distribution histogram and value of statistical parameters - standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis are calculated by using computer programs. It is found that the value of the statistical parameters has typical distributions for a particular kind of traffic flow pattern. Prediction equations for differences of percentile sound level in terms of variables derived from the statistical parameters are formulated by using Multiple Regression Method. It has been proved that higher accuracy of road traffic noise level can be predicted by the application of the prediction equations with parameters containing skewness and kurtosis than the equations formed from Gaussian distribution theory, especially in pulsed flow traffic condition with higher intermittent noise. With more site survey works and reasonable assumptions, definite range of value of the standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis of sound level related to every traffic condition and acoustical environment can be predicted. In addition to the application of the proposed methodologies and prediction, equations for universal use can be formulated. As skewness and kurtosis are useful statistical parameters to characterize road traffic noise of high level of intermittency, they may be further developed as the parameters for the formulation of subjective model relating to human response. |
