Energy payback time and greenhouse gas emission analysis of a roof-mounted BIPV in Hong Kongen_US
Renewable energy has been proposed to be used these years in order to replace part of the power generation by the burning of fossil fuels and hence reduce the impacts of the green house effect. Photovoltaic system (PV) is one of the most common renewable energy which generates power form the sun. PV is "free" from operating energy and emits no green house gases during its operation. However, it required energy and emits green house gases during the manufacturing processes. This study aimed to study the energy payback time (EPBT) and the green house gases pay back time (GPBT) in order to analysis whether a PV system is truly sustainable and green in nature. Solar radiations received and the annual energy output are two factors affecting the EPBT. They were simulated by the Perez model, and the Borowy and Salameh model with different orientations and tilted angles. South facing surface with slope 30o was concluded to be the optimal design for the local weather. Embodied energy was also estimated using the manufacturing data and literatures' figures. The EPBT calculated was about 6.4 years. Factors affecting the EPBT were also analyzed in this study. The green house gases emission was also studied. One of the Hong Kong power company serving the Kowloon area and the New Territories (CLP) was introduced. The information of the three power stations of CLP such as the location and the type of fuel were introduced. The fuel mixture composition of CLP and others major areas in the world were also studied. The GPBT of the case study PV system are estimated based on the information from the CLP annual report and some related figures from literatures and the GPBT calculated was about 2 years. The general life of a PV system is between 20 - 30 years. The EPBT and the GPBT estimated in this study were 6.2 and 2 years respectively. They were far below the life time of a PV system. It may be concluded that the case study PV system is sustainable and green. Owning to the fact that the uses of PV could be increase in the future, this study provides a reference and may proof that the local weather condition is suitable for the PV electricity generation.en_US
